Raising a Japanese Black Pine to an upright position?
This tree was pulled down during a freezing rain we had in the area recently. It is about 8 - 10 feet tall and has about a 6 inch diameter trunk. The root were partially pulled out of the ground
from the weight of the ice that formed on the branches , limbs and needles..
Other than that it is in good condition. How can I raise it, with minimum damage to the tree, to its former upright position?
The damage that occured to the roots is far more that what you will or can do in the uprighting of the poor thing. You need to place it back ASAP so that self recovery can take place with the tree in proper orientation to what roots are still functional.
Probably the tree raised out of the ground as it toppled. You will not get it back to the same level unless you dig under the trunk area and digging thus will no doubt cause more root system damage. So, just tip it back up taking care not to score the trunk. The tree will have to be staked with no less than 3 attachment points and 4 is better. Guy lines need to placed high on the trunk such as 3 or so feet from the top.
Because root loss has been extensive, the tree must be prunned to the point of removing at least 3/4 of the branches OR strip off all the needles except for a couple small branches at the very top.
If the tree is capable of recovery, then it will bud new leaves/needles as its remaining root system will support and not one more than that. If it were my tree, I'd remove all but two of littlest branches at the very top. What do you have to gain/loose?
If it dies you would replace it anyway. If it lives, this tree will look wierd and it will always be sitting on a hump of ground. If you don't like the way it looks by the end of this next growing season; chop it and replace. You will have only lost one growing season for a new tree.
Probably the best approach is to remove this poor critter and replace it with an Empress. The Empress will grow in one season, taller than the Japanese Black Pine. Go to:
